The Humber Violence Prevention Partnership (VPP) commissioned Humber Learning Consortium (HLC) to deliver a series of focus groups with a diverse range of young people from hotspot areas, across the Humber sub-region. The report produced and embedded within this page has a specific East Riding of Yorkshire section and case studies from Bridlington, Driffield and Holderness.
In the report, issues hightlighted for the East Riding (page 21 of the document) include:
- Young people’s challenges in Bridlington and the Holderness Coast:
- Difficulties faced by young people in these areas include a lack of job opportunities, seasonal work, poor transport links, and inadequate vocational training. There is reference to rising crime, drug use, and violence that affects the quality of life of their lives.
- Lack of leisure facilities and investment for young people:
- Local young people state there is nothing for the young people in Bridlington, and that any investment in the town is geared towards tourism. There is frustration that there are no full-time jobs for young adults. Young people on the Holderness Coast resort to making their own entertainment, such as bus and train spotting and river-jumping, due to boredom and lack of amenities.
- Stereotyping and discrimination faced by young people:
- Young people report that they are treated differently by other residents in Driffield and Beverley, who assume that they are troublemakers, shoplifters, or drug dealers. It also gives examples of how young people are avoided or mistrusted because of their clothing, music, or appearance and that they are not given a fair chance to prove themselves or to contribute positively to society.
