Bridlington GP Access Project

The Bridlington GP Access Project report by Healthwatch East Riding of Yorkshire (HWERY) evaluates the accessibility and effectiveness of GP services in Bridlington, driven by an increase in patient concerns and difficulties accessing these services. The report (produced August 2024) highlights key findings, patient experiences, and provides recommendations for improvement.

Key points:

  • Project Background: Data was collected through public engagements, an online survey, a paper survey, and Enter & View visits to GP practices. The survey was promoted via public engagements and social media, and participants were given options to remain anonymous.

  • Key Findings: The survey received 481 responses, highlighting concerns such as long wait times for appointments, difficulties booking appointments over the phone, and a lack of support during referral periods. Positive feedback was received for in-person bookings and staff interactions.

  • Patient Experiences at Drs Reddy & Nunn: Patients reported issues with repeat prescriptions, long phone wait times, and poor communication between departments. However, many found in-person booking easier and had positive interactions with staff.

  • Patient Experiences at Humber Primary Care: Patients reported significant declines in experiences, particularly in appointment availability and wait times. Many were directed to other services like the urgent treatment centre, leading to frustration.

  • Overall Satisfaction: Overall satisfaction varied, with Drs Reddy & Nunn patients generally more satisfied compared to Humber Primary Care patients.

  • Recommendations: include offering multiple booking methods, improving signposting to other healthcare services, setting target response times for online consultations, and ensuring privacy for patients disclosing healthcare needs.
